Alton Mason in collaboration with creative platform Melanin Unscripted has released the short film and social impact campaign “Rise in Light” with an aim to shed light on one of the darkest corners of the world, and provide relief to children and families in Lagos, Nigeria affected by COVID-19.

Having exceeded its initial goal to raise $10,000 within the first few days of its release, Alton is now using the film, directed by Amarachi Nwosu and soof Light, as a catalyst to start important conversations around Africa and how people are being impacted by the pandemic.

In Alton’s words: “‘Rise in Light’ is a movement created by the youth to inspire and ignite the future leaders of our world. It’s a call for change, evidence of freedom and the expression of love and joy.”

The film also served as an introduction to Alton’s debut single “Gimme, Gimme” with visuals shot in the heart of Lagos, Nigeria to reveal to us a coming-of-age story for the 23-year old star.

Proceeds from the campaign will be used in support of the Khan Foundation, and to provide relief packages to the wider community of children and families in the Makoko and Iwaya slums of Lagos. Relief packages provided by the foundation will include basic necessities such as food and toiletries, and workshops to educate people in the community on how to stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic.
