When I was a little boy I sometimes reflect on some factors of life. I asked myself these questions;
- Where are we coming from and where are we going?
- Is growth necessary, why can’t we stay forever young?
- Is there life beyond the grave?
As I grew older, the answers to these questions got clearer. I began to realize that life is a beautiful passage through time and eternity. Hence, I translated these thoughts of mine into visuals using the lens of my iPhone.
The concept of this artwork portrays three individuals: a boy, a young man and an old man which signifies the gradual transition of growth in mankind.
The old man is seen pointing forward to the young man and the boy which signifies “The Journey” that lies ahead of us after this journey of life.
The colors of the traditional Kente cloth represent the various attributes which mankind possesses in life. Yellow stands for status, blue – purity of spirit, red – passion and green – fertility. These attributes form the inner and outer being of mankind which connect us to each other.
The “Gye Nyame” stool symbolizes “The Supreme God” as the “exceptional” mediator of our lives in leading us from the physical world into the afterlife.
But the big question is, “where are we going after this life”?
Neither you nor I really know the answer to this question. Some people might say it is heaven, but until then it still remains a mystery…the boundless passage.
About the Artist
Reginald Kofi Boateng is a young visual artist, born in Accra Ghana who uses an iPhone to capture and edit beautiful stories around him. His work reflects on creating an imaginary world using vibrant colors, contrasting them with the melanin skin of his subjects, which gives a feeling of nostalgia to his digital artwork.
His work has been featured on OSENGWA and Prazzle Magazine. He has also participated in shows at the Calabar Gallery NYC, The Cowrie Culture and many more.
